Rusatom Service JSC nuclear infrastructure experts participated in IAEA-organized technical meeting for municipalities with nuclear facilities
From October 31 to November 4, 2022. IAEA held a technical meeting for municipalities housing nuclear facilities The purpose of the event was to establish a dialogue between representatives of municipalities and the public, sharing best practices on stakeholder involvement.
The meeting was attended by representatives of local governments and non-governmental organizations involved in the nuclear program of several countries (Canada, Egypt, France, India, Nigeria, Norway, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Thailand, the United States, and others).
During the event, participants highlighted the evolving experience of municipalities, expectations and concerns of local communities.
The technical meeting was aimed at collecting examples and case studies meant to complement the IAEA's publication “Engaging Local Stakeholders in Nuclear Programs”. Margarita Ashotovna Yuzbashyan, an expert of the Nuclear Infrastructure Department of Rusatom Service JSC, spoke as part of the collection of comments to the publication: "We suggest that the document should reflect positive experience of operation of information centers, as well as public reports on quantitative and qualitative assessment of the contribution of NPP projects in achieving the goals of sustainable development of the host country. Such measures increase public acceptance of nuclear industry projects”.
Experts at the meeting noted that stakeholder engagement is a crucial element of the nuclear program. At the end of the technical meeting, the IAEA intends to draw up a report giving examples of local stakeholder engagement in nuclear programs.
