Diplomas presented to Egyptian students at Tomsk Polytechnic University

On February 15, 2022, a graduation ceremony was held for six Egyptian students of the Tomsk Polytechnic University of nuclear and related Specialties.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of Russian and foreign organizations involved in the large-scale project for the construction of the El Dabaa NPP: Rosatom State Corporation, Atomstroyexport JSC, Rusatom Service JSC, Petrojet, Hassan Allam Holding, Centre for Industrial Modernization of Egypt, Egyptian-Russian University, as well as the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in the Russian Federation.

The graduation ceremony was opened by Leonid Sukhikh, Vice-Rector for Research and Technology Transfer of TPU, who congratulated the graduates on a significant event in their professional life. “Nuclear energy is becoming more open. The development of a peaceful atom plays an important role in the development of the modern world, and activities to reduce the carbon footprint are also of great importance. You, our graduates, will create the future of the nuclear industry”.

On behalf of the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in the Russian Federation, Egyptian graduates were congratulated by Dr. Mohamed Elsergani, Attache for Culture, Director of the Bureau of Culture of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Moscow, noting that students are real ambassadors of Egypt. The students, studying in Russia with the support of Rosatom, received a lot of knowledge thanks to the faculty members of Tomsk Polytechnic University.

Rosatom State Corporation was presented at the event by Vera Upirova, senior manager of the project office on education development and international cooperation of Rosatom State Corporation, who noted the importance of the El Dabaa NPP project not only for Egypt, but also for the whole of Africa as potentially the most powerful nuclear power plant in the region. During the informative report, Vera Upirova spoke about Rosatom cooperation with 60 countries of the world in the field of personnel training, educational cooperation programs of the State Corporation with Egypt, noting that currently 48 Egyptian students are studying in nuclear specialties in Russia. According to a representative of the State Corporation, Rosatom has built an educational ecosystem for training personnel for partner countries, consisting of 18 basic universities of Rosatom. At the end of her speech, Vera Upirova invited all participants to Rosatom International Career Day at the TPU site on March 15, 2022.

The organization of Atomstroyexport JSC was represented by Grigory Sosnin, Vice-President of ASE JSC, Director of the project for the construction of the El-Dabaa NPP. Grigory Sosnin shared that Egypt became his second homeland, and he hopes that Russia became the second homeland for the graduates. It is important that the project director noted a potentially large number of vacancies within the framework of the NPP construction. “At the moment, 200 employees at the El Dabaa NPP site include 5 graduates of TPU. In 2025 it is planned to recruit about 34 thousand specialists for the project, and I hope there will already be about 1000 TPU graduates among them.”

Many Egyptian companies are present at the El Dabaa NPP site, their representatives also visited the graduation ceremony. Petrojet representative, Dr. Sherif El Diheidi, Deputy General Director for nuclear energy projects, noted that the company has a long-standing relationship with Rosatom, which is of high importance for the development of Petrojet on a global scale as part of the NPP construction project. Dr. Sherif also noted that he was pleased to see the achievements of Rosatom in Egypt, especially in the transfer of knowledge to Egyptian society, expressing his pride to the graduates for the energy and efforts that the guys invested, studying under the auspices of Rosatom among the best specialists.

Hassan Allam Holding Director of the Talent and Performance Management Group, Ms. Hanan, noted that the El Dabaa NPP project is the most important project for Egypt over the next 15 years, and it is a great honor to learn from Rosatom about the proper management of the nuclear plant. The company, acting as one of the top national employers, attaches great importance to the development of human resources and is also interested in young specialists for the NPP project, especially in graduates who received Russian nuclear education.

Dr. Amged Farag, representative for the development of international cooperation of the Industrial Modernization Centre, expressed high hopes for graduates in the modernization of the country and the creation of a “New Egypt”. While awarding the graduates, Alexander Matveev, director of the TPU School of Energy and Power Engineering, noted that the diploma is a pass to the profession that the students chose 6 years ago. Dr. Alaa Elbatsh, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the Egyptian-Russian University, noted the wide range of educational cooperation with Rosatom programs and praised the young Egyptian professionals for their high level of training.

Concluding the graduation ceremony, Khaled Reda Abdelhamid Elshahhat Ibrahim on behalf of the graduates thanked the faculty members of TPU, confidently noting that “after years of training, we can say that we are highly qualified specialists in the nuclear industry”.

The event showed the close relationship between Russian and Egyptian organizations, as well as mutual interest in developing the human resources of the project for the El Dabaa NPP construction for the subsequent effective operation and demonstration of a high level of trust and cooperation between Russia and Egypt.
