Rosatom Presented Balanced Nuclear Fuel Cycle Solutions

06.06.2022

On June 3, 2022, Rosatom hosted a webinar on balanced nuclear fuel cycle (NFC) organized by TENEX JSC and TVEL JSC with the support of Rusatom Service JSC. The event brought together representatives of the nuclear industry enterprises and partner universities of Rosatom State Corporation.

Balanced NFC is a new product line of Rosatom State Corporation, which offers integrated management of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and its processing products. Its main objective is to fundamentally reduce the volume and activity of waste to be disposed of. Balanced NFC will improve safety of nuclear waste management and reduce environmental risks, provide a sustainable model of consumption and production, without creating nuclear legacy issues for future generations, and re-involve valuable raw materials in the production chain through nuclear materials recycling.

TENEX JSC and TVEL JSC are responsible for implementation of the product line. As a nuclear infrastructure development integrator, Rusatom Service JSC assists foreign partners in preparation for participation in the Balanced NFC (in the field of institutional, personnel and legal development).

During the event Mikhail Baryshnikov, Director of Innovations and Technologies Department at TENEX, and Alexander Pavlyuk, Director of TVEL JSC New Nuclear Products Department, presented the Balanced NFC development strategy. The speakers highlighted that an integrated product implies individual approach to each customer and that it can be supplied as a batch or as components. "Balanced NFC" takes into account all demands of the customer while maintaining the main quality – efficient fuel supply with a radical reduction of waste.

Yevgeny Zhurbenko, Senior Project Manager of Innovations and Technologies Department at TENEX, spoke about nuclear infrastructure peculiarities for a balanced NFC.

During the discussion Yulia Chernyakhovskaya, Deputy Director General for Nuclear Infrastructure of Rusatom Service JSC, noted that today's priority is to determine the infrastructure requirements for implementing the Balanced NFC in partner countries of Rosatom State Corporation and to create a roadmap for nuclear infrastructure development.

Rosatom is willing to provide foreign customers with the entire range of solutions needed to close the NFC. These solutions are based on advanced technologies, including fast-neutron reactors, fractionation and transmutation of radioactive elements, production of uranium-plutonium fuel. This makes it one of the best available technologies that can be recommended to all partners of Rosatom, both newcomers to the nuclear power industry and NPP operators with long-term experience.
