Rosatom held a large-scale IT hackathon in the capital of the Republic of Belarus

04.03.2024

14 teams from 5 Belarusian universities took part in the mathematical modeling competition

March 1, 2024, Minsk - The first Rosatom State Corporation hackathon on mathematical modeling - “HakAtom: REPEAT simulation skills” - was held at the National Children's Technopark in Minsk (Republic of Belarus) on February 28-29.

14 teams from five leading technical universities of the Republic of Belarus - Belarusian State University (BSU), Belarusian National Technical University (BNTU), Belarusian State Technological University (BSTU), Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics (BSUIR), Gomel State University named after F.Skorina (GSU) - took part in “HakAtom”.

The winner of the competition was the team "SK" (Belarusian State University). The second and third place respectively were taken by Digital Constructors (Belarusian State Technological University), BEMS (Belarusian State University). The main awards include a tour of the winners and runners up to the Belarusian NPP, during which the young talents will get acquainted with the industrial application of digital technologies at a real nuclear power facility.

The competition topic was mathematical modeling as Rosatom leading direction in the field of industrial digital solutions. The tasks are related to one of the Corporation's flagship digital products in the field of 1D simulation REPEAT, developed by ETC GET JSC (Rusatom Service, Rosatom) and released on the market in 2022. In particular, participants solved the problem to simulate heat flow in a shell-and-tube heat exchanger and determined pipelines walls temperatures under various operating conditions.

The event was organized by Rosatom State Corporation represented by the Project Office for Education Development and International Cooperation (PO EDIC) and ETC GET. The goal of the event is to promote mathematical modeling and CAE-class Russian digital products among students and teachers of Belarusian universities, as well as among a wide range of young IT specialists of the Republic of Belarus.

“HakAtom” in the National Children's Technopark in Minsk was welcomed by Valery Karezin, Director of PO EDIC, Sergey Bukreev, Director of GET LAB LLC, Stanislav Levitsky, Director of the Country Office of Rosatom State Corporation in the Republic of Belarus, Pyotr Pekutko, Head of the Department of Science and Innovation Activities of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus, Yury Prudnikovich, Head of the Division of International Cooperation, Training and Information Support of the Department of Nuclear Power Engineering of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Belarus, Olga Lugovskaya, Director of the Department of Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus, Mikhail Shevaldin, Deputy Chief Engineer of the State Enterprise “Belarusian NPP”, heads of Belarusian universities.

Stanislav Levitsky, Director of the Country Office of Rosatom State Corporation in the Republic of Belarus: “Rosatom cooperation with Belarusian colleagues in the field of nuclear industry has systemic nature. And the important factor here is the training of personnel for further industry development. It shall be conducted taking into account the requirements of Industry 4.0, which implies active application of digital technologies for safety and efficiency of high-tech production - that's why the topic of mathematical modeling determined the competition topic. We expect that HakAtom will become a regular project, and Russian teams will be actively involved”.

Pyotr Pekutko, Head of the Department of Science and Innovation Activity of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus: “I think it is important that HakAtom has brought together students from a number of Belarusian universities to solve problems of this topic - it will strengthen the community of young professionals passionate about the industrial software, its development and application in production. The development of industrial “digitization” is a task of great complexity. We are dedicated to identify and support the talents that will make digital breakthroughs in our economy”.

Sergey Bukreev, Director of GET LAB LLC (Rusatom Service, Rosatom): “Hackathon is organized for students with a keen interest in engineering, programming and invention. Completing the tasks will require actual engineering and creativity, cross-curricular knowledge - and we also expect participants to present their solutions in a creative and informative presentation”.

For reference

“HakAtom” hackathon develops the educational direction of system cooperation between Rosatom State Corporation and the Republic of Belarus in the field of digital solutions for industry, which was launched in Minsk at TIBO-2023 forum by signing an agreement between Rosatom's company “Engineering and Technical Center GET”, State Production Association of Electric Power Industry “Belenergo”, "Belenergoremnaladka" JSC and the country office of Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation in the Republic of Belarus - "Rusatom Bel" LLC on cooperation in the field of simulator construction and creation of digital twins, including development and implementation of simulator complexes for training of instructor personnel of power facilities and creation of digital twins of process cycles of power plants, boiler houses and other power facilities. Further, Rosatom represented by the company “Tsifrum” and the “Industry Center for Capital Construction” concluded an agreement with the Republican Union of Builders (the Republic of Belarus) and the Republican Unitary Enterprise "Republican Scientific and Technical Center for Pricing in Construction" (the Republic of Belarus) on the development of standardization in the field of information simulation technologies. Rosatom's company “Rusatom Digital Solutions” and the country office in the Republic of Belarus signed an agreement with one of the oldest Belarusian IT companies, “International Business Alliance” CJSC to implement joint digitalization projects based on Rosatom digital products and solutions.

Mathematical modeling systems / CAE-system (Computer-Aided Engineering) is software designed for calculations, analysis and simulation of physical processes for resolution of engineering problems. Systems allow using computational methods to simulate the "behavior" of industrial products in real operating conditions.

REPEAT (REal-time Platform for Engineering Automated Technologies) – CAE-class digital product, model-based environment for design and mathematical modeling. REPEAT is designed to create mathematical models of complex plants and processes in the energy sector, including the creation of digital twins. Its application contributes to increased efficiency of power facilities, reduced cost of production processes, reduced outages and unforeseen incidents. The possibility to develop models of power facilities and processes, create digital twins, design to increase the efficiency of power facilities, reduce the cost of production processes and the number of downtimes and accidents, as well as conduct virtual tests of the designed equipment is implemented in the product. It is a fully import-independent development of Engineering and Technical Center GET (part of Rusatom Service JSC, Rosatom State Corporation).

Logos is Rosatom's leading digital product for engineering analysis and supercomputer simulation of CAE-class. It was created based on long-term developments of Rosatom State Corporation, which have been implemented since 2009. The Logos family currently consists of seven modules: "Logos Aero-Hydro" - designed to simulate processes in air and water environments; "Logos Heat" - designed to evaluate thermal characteristics and modes of parts and assemblies; "Logos Strength" - used to solve static and dynamic strength problems; "Logos Hydrogeology" - is designed to solve problems of water balance of territories and simulation of ecological processes in complex geological environment; "Logos Platform" - is designed to integrate a single platform of "Logos" computing modules and CAE class software from various Russian developers; “Logos Prepost” is designed to prepare geometric models and their subsequent processing within the framework of numerical simulation and analysis of various engineering tasks; "Logos EMI" - is designed for numerical simulation of electromagnetic processes.
