30.04.2021

At the end of April, International Energy Agency held an online technical meeting on preparing country reports concerning status and trends in nuclear education. Around 40 nuclear field professionals from across the world, including China, India, Egypt, Kenya, Ghana, Turkey, and Belarus, engaged in the meeting.

The event was held to create a platform for ensuring an open dialog and sharing best practices in nuclear education, as well as in contribution to development of educational programs and nuclear knowledge in IAEA member states. The importance of creating a strong regional and inter-regional nuclear education network along with developing curricula and programs for nuclear personnel training was emphasized at the meeting.

Daria Semenova, a talent of Expert Department for Nuclear Infrastructure, presented her report Cooperation in Development of Nuclear Education and Nuclear Knowledge in New-member States. Contribution in Nuclear Program Sustainable Development at the meeting. The report reviewed Rosatom SC comprehensive approach to nuclear program personnel training and cooperation with partner countries in boosting human resources, starting from education in Russian nuclear universities to advanced training and retraining programs for working at nuclear facilities and in nuclear organizations.

“Currently, Rosatom SC basic universities have around 1800 international specialists, while studies of the majority of these professionals-to-be are funded by the state corporation quota for international students. Additionally, within training operational personnel for overseas projects Rusatom, JSC, will ensure training for 6000 international specialists by 2028”, Daria says. “This approach provides targeted training for nuclear program specialists and allows cultivating nuclear community, national expert team, and nuclear knowledge in the partner country.”

Russian party offers comprehensive cooperation in supporting all categories of nuclear program personnel to its international partners, including step-by-step training of operational personnel, promotion of nuclear personnel competencies, creation of training centers, and development of simulators and training materials.

Safe and long-term implementation of nuclear program requires advanced human resources infrastructure, which can be obtained by boosting national educational system, creating training programs in nuclear and related training fields, encouraging education and internship at operating facilities in the technology-supplying country or in other countries possessing similar technologies, as well as by ensuring international cooperation, which allows considering global experience and industry's best practices in operating plants and advancing staff.
